Sugar Land Earth Day celebration set for April 20

Sugar Land’s Earth Day Celebration – called Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rock – will be held April 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Activities will begin at Mercer Stadium, 16403 Lexington Blvd., with a recycling collection event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items accepted will include household electronics, paper for shredding, clothing and household goods for reuse.

The recycling collection event will follow these guidelines:

• Residents must remain in their vehicles at all times.
• Walk-ups will not be accepted.
• City staff will remove items from vehicles.
• Residents will not be able to watch their documents get shredded.
• Containers used to transport items and papers will not be returned.

In addition, grant funds from the Houston-Galveston Area Council and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will allow residents to dispose of batteries, oil, paint, antifreeze and fluorescent light bulbs during the recycling event.

Earth Day activities will continue at Sugar Land Town Square, where Keep Sugar Land Beautiful, Town Square Management and the City of Sugar Land have planned environmental activity booths and performances from 2-6 p.m.

Interactive booths will address recycling, waste reduction, clean water, water conservation, tree care, nature appreciation and much more.  Keep Sugar Land Beautiful will accept cell phones to be recycled and eyeglasses for reuse by Recycle for Sight.

Other planned activities follow

• Jack Golden’s “Environmental Extravaganza: EnviroGanza” combines elements of his highly acclaimed Garbage is My Bag,  A Litter Bit Hurts and Water Water Everywhere shows. This exciting and unique program covers recycling, waste reduction, litter prevention, clean water and water conservation.
• The Non Toxic Band provides lively, original, musical concerts for young audiences with music that incorporates environmental and multicultural themes that are educational and engaging. Their hit songs include “Why Did the Honeybee Dance”; “The Old Hollow Tree”; “Water, Water Everywhere”; and “Here Today, Here Tomorrow.”
• Texas Snakes and More, a snake and reptile show, educates and entertain people about snakes, dispel myths and misconceptions and bring about a greater appreciation and respect for these fascinating creatures.
• Keep Sugar Land Beautiful and Brilliant Sky Toys & Books will announce the winners of the Reduce Reuse Recycle & Rock Poetry Slam Contest.  The contest runs through April 6 and is open to students in grades kindergarten through fifth.   Visit www.kslb.org to download the rules and admission form. Winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded at Reduce Reuse Recycle and Rock.
