Lake Olympia Middle School (LOMS) paired philanthropy with art in a project that gave students the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents while helping to feed members of our community. Through its Empty Bowls soup meal fundraising event, LOMS raised $2,105 in donations that will benefit Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels program.

With a minimum $10 donation made prior to the event, individuals attending the soup meal selected a hand-crafted bowl designed by LOMS art students. Each bowl was stamped with the official Empty Bowls insignia and served as a gift to the donars to remind them of all the empty bowls in our community.

Kimberly Carroll, LOMS principal, welcomed guests to the occasion and introduced art teachers, Donna Pierce and Rebecca Barkely, who spearheaded the event. Participants then dined together, enjoying soup provided by area restaurants from their gift bowls. During the meal, guests enjoyed a video presentation that highlighted students crafting their bowls.

Students Nia Eugene, Maria Navarro and Madariel Turner also recited poems they prepared on the topic of hunger. Representatives of Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels, Rebecca Maitland and Jim Hudnall, thanked guests for their support of the program and reminded them why programs like this exist.

Throughout the year, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels has provided home-delivered meals to more than 1,000 older adults, who are home-bound and unable to cook nutritious meals for themselves.

“Unfortunately, in Fort Bend County there are many people who go home without eating,” said Maitland, “With your school’s donation, we can continue to provide daily meals to approximately 1,200 senior citizens.”
