9th Annual Impact A Hero 5K Walk, Run and Wheel this weekend

The Ninth Annual Impact A Hero 5K Walk, Run and Wheel will be held Saturday, May 18 at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas to help raise funds that provide emotional and financial support for our severely wounded post- 9/11veterans and their families.

Impact A Hero and KPRC’s Sports Director, Randy McIlvoy, will host wounded veteran heroes and their families for a weekend of “thanks” and encouragement. This year, Impact A Hero anticipates more than 3,000 runners, including 50 wounded heroes and their families.

The weekend begins with the Impact A Hero 5K Walk, Run and Wheel beginning at 7:30 a.m. on May 18.  After the Heroes arrive escorted by the Patriot Guard motorcycles, the singing of our National Anthem will feature Dana Bowman parachuting into the starting line area to kick off the 5K.

Dana is a retired Sergeant First Class with the U.S. Army, and a previous member of the Special Forces and the Army’s elite parachute team, the “Golden Knights.” Dana is a double amputee, having lost his legs in an accident during Golden Knights training. He has received worldwide attention as a motivational speaker and has given over 400 speeches in the last few years and has been featured in magazines that include: Sports Illustrated, reader’s Digest, People, etc, and has been featured on television programs including: Dateline, A Current Affair, real TV, NBC Person of the Week, and others.

In addition to the 5K, there is a 1K Kids’ Fun Run. Children will have fun running with Texan’s Toro! Afterwards, there will be live concert entertainment by The Attenuators.

Houston Texans, Center Chris Myers, and several of his coaches and teammates will participate with our wounded heroes. Sports Radio 610-AM, KILT-FM 100.3, HOT 95.7 and MIX 96.5 will be onsite to show their support and visit with the patrons.

The race proceeds will benefit our wounded veterans and their families. These military men and women who benefit from the race weekend are recovering from severe wounds. Donation for the 2012 Impact A Hero 5K exceeded $400,000.

Impact A Hero Weekend gives Houstonians an opportunity to join national celebrities in thanking our severely wounded servicemen and women for sacrificing their minds, bodies and sometimes their lives.

Through multiple events around the country, Impact Player Partners raises funds that are used for unencumbered grants to those who have made tremendous sacrifices for us and our country. These grants help in covering lost wages of parents and spouses who are required to stop working to provide care for our heroes.
