Storm rolls over Fort Bend County

By LeaAnne Klentzman

The clouds rolled in, darkness crept over Fort Bend County until bolts of lightning and torrents of rain blasted through with what is hopefully the last cold front of the season.

Friday morning as the storm rolled through, the area police, fire, and medical personnel were stretched paper thin. At the height of the storm, about 10:30 am, lightening had struck several structures and two house fires were burning; near Katy on Twin Stone Lane and the other in the Aliana subdivision off Texas 99 near Richmond on Lake Court.

Also at that time police were responding to injury accidents on FM 723 near FM 359 just north of Richmond/Rosenberg and on US 59 near Beasley and a lightning strike/car fire on US 59 near Williams Way just outside of Richmond. No deaths were reported as a result of the storms until the wee hours of Saturday morning.

According to authorities, in the early hours of Saturday morning 911 operators at the Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call for help. The man asking for help could not give them a specific address or location just an idea of where he had been traveling. While dispatchers were talking to him, the line went silent.

Reportedly, that call for help ultimately led to the discovery of a submerged vehicle in a slough in the 18000 block of Old Richmond Road that was full of runoff rain water from hours before. The car was in the section of the slough that is near a side entrance to the Pheasant Creek subdivision and the intersection of Tranquil Drive off Old Richmond Road.

Inside that submerged car authorities found the lifeless body of 21 year old Syed Shawn Ali. While specific details have yet to be released his cause of death is likely to be ruled as accidental drowning. According to the Ali family, Syed had graduated from the University of Houston the night before.

As quickly as the storm rolled in it sped away toward the Gulf leaving swollen waterways and soggy ground helping to lift the drought.
