Sugar Land Branch Library presents free Friday movie matinees

Fort Bend County Libraries will feature free Friday Movie Matinees at Sugar Land Branch Library, 550 Eldridge, beginning in June. A variety of movie genres, from animated family films to an inspirational drama, will be shown.

On Friday, June 14, library patrons will be treated to the true story of a rescue mission in small-town Alaska in 1988 during the Cold War. A news reporter enlists the aid of his ex-girlfriend – a Greenpeace volunteer – and a native Alaskan boy to rally the entire community to save a family of majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle. Eventually, even rival superpowers join together to come to the aid of the whales. This movie is rated PG. Showtime is 12:30 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library.

The special feature on Friday, June 28, is an animated family adventure film set in Scotland during a rugged and mythical time. A skilled archer, Princess Merida is the impetuous and headstrong daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. Determined to carve her own way in life, Merida defies an age-old custom that is sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land. When her actions inadvertently unleash chaos in the kingdom, Merida turns to an eccentric witch for help, and is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all her skills and resources to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late. This movie is rated PG. Showtime is 12:30 pm, in the Meeting Room.

The movies are free and open to the public. For more information about the featured movies, call the branch library at 281-238-2140 or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.
