2013 Sugar Land Junior Superstar named
Sugar Land Town Square recently hosted its 3rd Annual Sugar Land Junior Superstar competition to spotlight local youth talent in Fort Bend County. Fifteen contestants competed in the American Idol-like competition, and the judges named nine-year-old Gabriela Sanchez the 2013 Sugar Land Junior Superstar.
Her first year in the competition, Sanchez impressed the audience and judges with her rendition of Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On.” Also earning top honors were second place winner Jacqueline Botz, who sang “Popular” from the Wicked soundtrack, and third place winner Cashmir Khawaja, who sang “Orange Colored Sky” by Natalie Cole.
The top three finalists won prize packages with gift certificates from participating Sugar Land Town Square retailers, and as the winner, Sanchez has the opportunity to perform live at an upcoming Sugar Land Town Square event.
The contestants were voted on by a panel of local, celebrity judges, including Christian Taylor of Universal-Republic Records; Tony Bracy of Capital Records; and Recording Artist Jude Gonzalves. Local radio personality Michele Fisher was emcee at the event, which started with a concert by 2012 Junior Superstar Selena Packard.
Next up at Town Square is the 8th Annual Sugar Land Superstar competition for Fort Bend County residents ages 14 and up. Round One of the competition will take place on June 8, Round Two on July 13, and Finale Night is on August 10.
