The girls in Troop 28157 from Rainbow Stars Service Unit recently marked a major milestone with the successful completion of their Girl Scout Silver Award—the highest achievement a Girl Scout Cadette can receive.

To earn this award, a girl must dedicate herself to completing a Take Action project that addresses a need in her community and makes a lasting difference. To earn the Girl Scout Silver Award, girls in sixth through eighth grade must fulfill requirements related to leadership, career exploration and community service.

The Troop’s Silver Award project began in August of 2012 and was completed in May of 2013.  Through a leadership project at Creative Dreams, the girls addressed the issue of financially disadvantaged and foster youth having the ability to explore their own creativity through art, dance and music. When they discovered there was a need for this, the girls used resources wisely to feed and work with the kids to help them express their creativity through art, dance, cheer, music, and drama.

The troop leader, Cheryl Macaluso, said, “The girls now truly understand how privileged they are to live in such a great community.  Volunteering at the center has been a life changing experience for some of the girls. The members of Troop 28157 used their strengths, talents, and skills and put their plans into action to earn the Silver Award while each taking a leadership role. “
