Run for Boston 5K/1K to benefit victims and families of the Boston Marathon bombing

Fort Bend Fit Friends got together and created a fundraiser for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. On May 19, over 500 athletics, some wearing Boston Marathon bibs, stood ready to start as Bruce Mercer sang the Star Bangled Banner. So far the event has raised over $17,495 – just shy of the $20,000 goal. Donations can still be made to “The One Fund Boston”.

Recently, Fort Bend Fit friends got together at a coffee shop and decided to create a fundraiser for the victims of the bombing. Within a week of the tragedy, event permits were approved, sponsors were on board, and registration was up and running for the Run for Boston 5K/1K. So far, the event has raised over $17,495 — that’s just shy of the $20,000 goal.

On May 19, over 550 athletes — some wearing their Boston Marathon bibs — stood ready to start as Bruce Mercer sang The Star Spangled Banner. Bubba Thames, of Houston FIT and Spring Action Photos, was at the finish line and post race party taking photos.

First place overall male winner was Erik Dill, who finished in 18:37. First place female was Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, finishing in 20:45. The first youth to cross the finish line was Joshua Brooks, at 19:21. Joshua has also won his age group in the USA FIT Half Marathon the past couple of years. First female youth was Adley Halligan at 28:05.

Donations continue to come in, and Fort Bend Fit hopes to bring the total up to $20,000. Funds will go to The One Fund Boston, The One Fund Boston continues to collect donations; however there are concerns that costs will far outweigh available resources to serve the victims. For this reason, continuing collections are crucial. Donations can still be made via the registration site www.thedriven.net.

Expenses for the Run for Boston 5K/1K totaled less than $850, thanks to the many donors and sponsors supporting the run.

Fort Bend Fit is a 5K/10K, Marathon and Half Marathon Program celebrating 14 years in Fort Bend County.  For more information go to www.fortbendfit.org
