Niagara Bottling sets grand opening for July 12

By Betsy Dolan

Niagara Bottling, the second largest bottled water company in the United States, will hold their official “invitation only” grand opening at their newly constructed plant in Missouri City on July 12.

The Ontario, California based company built their new 356,000 square foot plant in the Lakeview Business Park. The facility, which has two bottling lines currently in production with room to expand, has the capacity to make 1350 water bottles a minute, 81,000 in an hour and 2.3 million bottles every day. Niagara will handle water processing, bottle manufacturing, warehousing and distribution.

“We are excited about the laser guided vehicles now being used to load bottles onto trucks. They are the latest state-of-the-art technology in the world,” said Art Miramontes, Plant Director.

Currently 88 people have been hired with the goal being 94 within the first year. The plan is to have 269 direct and supplemental positions within the first 10 years of operation in Missouri City.

Missouri City competed with two other cities in the Houston region. Missouri City, Fort Bend County and the local water control district offered Niagara an approximately 60 percent tax abatement over the next 10 years, according to Bob Graf, the city’s former economic development coordinator. In addition, the city also offered to streamline Niagara’s permitting process.

The company decided to build a facility in the Houston area based on market demand, and it chose Missouri City because of factors such as local government practices, water resources for bottling and a strong community workforce, according to Honey Rand, a Niagara spokeswoman.

The Missouri City, Texas plant will be the company’s 12th location nationwide. Niagara has bottling plants in eight states including Texas.
