Photo ID now required when voting

By Elsa Maxey

The next time you go vote in Fort Bend, take a photo ID because it will now be required when voting in Texas elections. Locally, that probably means the November 6th upcoming election with Sugar Land about to call it for a $50 million bond referendum, which may list project components individually or in a lump sum.

Fort Bend County recently discussed nearly $1 billion in mobility projects for a potential bond election then, too.

The state legislature passed the law requiring a photo ID in 2011, but it did not take effect because the change needed pre-clearance by the Justice Department under the Voting Rights Act. But last month’s U.S. Court ruling allows the immediate implementation of law.

Texas, other southern states and some parts of the country have needed pre-clearance for changes in election procedures due to its past history relating to voting discrimination practices. Fears by opponents of the Texas law impacting Fort Bend among the 254 counties throughout the state fear that officials in small communities could make changes without public notice or could cancel an election or even move the location of a polling place before election day without scrutiny. “No chance, we’ve got the Star,” said one of our readers!
