Sugar Land, Texas – Tom Walters, a Literacy Council of Fort Bend County volunteer tutor, has been honored as the recipient of the 2013 Literacy Texas “Volunteer of the Year” award.  Tom will be recognized during a special state-wide ceremony at the annual conference held in San Marcos, TX on August 12, 2013.

Tom has been a tutor for the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County for six years and in that time he has served well over 2000 hours as a one-on-one GED tutor. Tom is not only an attribute to our organization, but most importantly to the students.

Tom states, “The rewards outweigh the time and effort it takes to be a tutor.  It is a very real reward to see the people grow and come out of their shells. Students find it a comfortable environment in which to learn and work. The students I have worked with have had their worlds opened up because of their experience with the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County. Whether or not they have received their GED, they are acquiring life skills and better jobs in the community. Others use their enhanced language and reading skills to better assimilate into their communities and environment.”

Tom’s most precious gift is his passion and attitude toward the students who access our services and programs. The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County congratulates Tom Walters for state-wide recognition!
