Action allows Eminent Domain proceedings for Spur 10 to begin

By Elsa Maxey

After a closed door session of the Fort Bend County Commissioners Court on July 9, its unanimous action allows the county to move forward on eminent domain proceedings for acquiring land for Spur 10, one of Fort Bend’s mobility projects. In October 2012, commissioners passed a resolution for using eminent domain to obtain right of way property required to widen Spur 10. The property lies along Gerken and Hartledge roads between SH 36 and U.S. 59, and consists of about 55 parcels of land.

As previously reported by the “Star”, which is stated in the resolution, the improvements to Spur 10 are intended to increase safety, access, and mobility for the traveling public and will also add capacity for projected population growth. A portion of Spur 10, according to an accounting, had almost 1,200 vehicles traveling on it each day in 2005, and projections stated that the same part of the road would have close to 3,000 vehicles per day in 2025.

Specific hearing dates relating to the eminent domain proceedings have not been announced. But they will allow the county to legally acquire the land and compensate the owners of the land.

Spur 10 is a route within Fort Bend County that starts at SH 36 near Pleak…at a stop sign, and it runs in a northwesterly direction ending at SH 36 northwest of Rosenberg. The spur is generally traveled by motorists going northbound to avoid passing through Rosenberg. It is reported to go along entirely rural areas. Motorists on Spur 10 can also access U.S. 59 to the northeast by taking a feeder road, and may travel to the southwest by taking a ramp off the overpass.
