Library presents Swedish-weaving class Aug. 3 – Sept. 21

Eileen Appel will be teaching the class

A series of instructional classes on Swedish Weaving will take place at Fort Bend County Libraries’ First Colony Branch Library, 2121 Austin Parkway in Sugar Land, on eight consecutive Saturdays, beginning August 3 and continuing through September 21, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, in the library’s Conference Room. Interested needle crafters may attend individual sessions or the whole series. All experience levels are welcome.

Swedish Weaving, also known as Huck Embroidery, is a traditional stitching technique used to embellish linens such as table runners, place mats, dish towels, pillow cases, and afghans. This heirloom needle art was first discovered among linens dating back to the 1600s, but it did not become popular in the United States until the early 20th century.

Stafford resident Eileen Appel will be teaching the class at the library. She became interested in the hobby twelve years ago, after seeing a relative demonstrate it. Since then, she has decorated a variety of items using the Swedish-Weaving technique, including decorative pillow cushions, many of which she has given away as gifts.

Examples of afghans, table runners, place mats, and other items created by Appel may be seen in the library’s display cases throughout the months of August and September.

The classes are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required. Anyone interested in attending the class(es) may sign up for either all of the sessions or just for certain dates. To register online at the library’s website (, click on “Calendar,” select “First Colony Branch Library,” and find the program. Participants may also register by calling the library at 281-238-2800, or by visiting the library.
