Winners announced for Missouri City’s 1st Annual Doubles Tennis Tournament

Jerry Wyatt, an avid tennis player, presented a certificate to Davy Daniel with Republic Services that sponsored the tournament. He told the group about the City’s efforts to acquire first-class amenities for residents, including the Recreation and Tennis Center that has 13 first-rate tennis courts.

A total of 42 tennis enthusiasts braved the sweltering heat to compete in the First Annual Doubles Tennis Tournament held at Missouri City’s Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Drive, on June 28 through June 30.

The winners in the men’s categories were: 

3.0-3.5 division- Larry and Jeremy Knight-winners; Don Cooper and Tom Leatherwood-runners up

4.0-4.5 division- Ronnie Kwan and Scott Boarman-winners;-Donnie Roshelle and Emmitt Bryan-runners up

Women’s division, the winners were:

4.0 division- Vicky Medina and Liza Kalu, winners of round robin tournament; Debra Jones and Jayna Halverson-runners up.

3.0-3.5 division– Martha Ruiz and Janet Wynne-winners; Leslie Taylor and Sharon Cahill-runners up.

During a luncheon for the players on June 29, Mayor Allen Owen and Mayor Pro Tem Jerry Wyatt welcomed the group and said the Doubles Tennis Tournament will be an annual event. Mayor Owen proposed a “Spikes and Sneakers” event next year that would include both the City’s Quail Valley Golf Course and the Recreation and Tennis Center for couples that could each participate in their favorite activity; golf or tennis.
