Brazos Bend Elementary School second-grader, Harvey Zhu, participated in the second annual Online National Chess Invitational Championship, held June 14-17.

He competed against several other top players from across the country in the “Under 8 Section” of the competition and earned 7th place. Zhu and other participants were invited by the United States Chess Federation (USCF) and ChessKid.com to participate in the internet competition based on their positions on the USCF Top-100 lists of February 2013.

When asked about his winning game, Zhu said, “I enjoyed winning. My opponent had a queen and promoted another one, but I managed to draw him with a three-fold repetition.”

Zhu is an avid chess player and prefers dynamic games and the middlegame. He has been playing for three years and encourages players to try their best at all times.
