Man drowns after car plunges into lake

As Sunday evening wound to a close Fulshear police were called to a lake in the Cross Creek subdivision after a car plunged into the water.
Fulshear Police Chief Kenny Seymour said Fulshear patrol units received the call about a car in the pond about 9:15 Sunday evening. Fulshear police and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s units all converged on the scene at the intersection of S. Fry and Cross Creek Bend. Seymour said officers from both agencies were on the scene inside of 2 minutes.
When those officers arrived they found a resident in the water trying to rescue the occupant of the vehicle. Seymour said, “Officers with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office swam out to the submerged vehicle and attempted to locate the driver but due to the distance and the depth, they were unsuccessful in finding anyone.”
According to witnesses, Ortiz-Rodriguez’s vehicle was driving westbound on S. Fry at a high rate of speed, said Seymour. He went on to explain that the vehicle failed to stop at the intersection, jumped the curb, and entered the lake. Witness also told law enforcement officers that they saw the occupant out of the truck “splashing around” before he went underneath the water.
Shortly after 11 pm, members of the Richmond Fire Department’s Dive Team located the submerged body of Juan Ortiz- Rodriguez (22) of Houston, said Seymour. Ortiz-Rodriguez was taken to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will determine the cause of death.
Chief Seymour said, “The City of Fulshear would like to express its condolences to the victim’s family and commend the citizens and deputies who selflessly responded to the incident.”
