Local author releases novel

Sugar Land author Ashlen Brown recently released her debut novel, The Secret of Blackjack Woods. This exciting story has already garnered great reviews from people of all ages, including an Amazon top reviewer. It is the perfect summer book for the whole family—both bigfoot believers and non-believers.

The Secret of Blackjack Woods was written after years of speculation about a mysterious encounter that Ashlen’s mother and sister had in the woods of their country home, just beyond the Brazos Bend State Park. This encounter inspired Ashlen’s story about the Thomas family and their big friend Charlie. In fact, the opening scene actually happened!

One summer evening, 12-year-old Jim Thomas is surprised by his mother and sister’s account of seeing a mysterious creature in their woods. Is it bigfoot? Thinking there has to be a reasonable explanation, Jim sets upon discovering the truth. In short time, Jim is faced with a being that supposedly doesn’t exist. Before long, his new friend is in trouble, and only Jim and his family can save him.

Ashlen grew up spending time between her parents’ home in Sugar Land and in the rural area near the state park. Having grown up in the area, it was exciting for her to be able to include the local settings and wildlife in her book. “Texas is so unique and has such an atmosphere. I wanted to capture that for my book so that readers could either relate to it or experience Texas for themselves,” she says.

“Nice little Bigfoot book by Ashlen Brown and hopefully not the last. The story is perfect for the family to all read. There is nothing inappropriate. I read it while at the edge of the woods and it was great to have all the forest noises as I read this little page turner. I think taking it camping would be great. Kids will love this book and I plan on letting my ten year old daughter read it. Whimsical and fun.” – S. W. (Amazon Top Reviewer)

Ashlen Brown holds a master’s degree from University of Houston-Victoria in forensic science and biomedical sciences. She grew up on the twenty-one acres that served as the setting for the book and provided the inspiration for her story. The Secret of Blackjack Woods is her first novel.
