Meadows Place to host 2nd Annual Kid Fish Derby

Tanner Cabezas & mom Colene show off his catch.

Get ready to fish! Saturday, August 17, from 7:00 to 9:00am, the City of Meadows Place is “reeling” up for their 2nd Annual Kid Fish Derby at McGrath Park. In an effort to make this an enjoyable morning of learning fun for kids aged 5-12, all you have to do is show up. If you have your own fishing gear and bait, great! Bring it. If not, supplies will be provided. Grand prizes for biggest fish, smallest fish, and most fish caught will be awarded as well as many door prizes in the fishing and outdoor related categories. Scholarships for Upwards sports programs will be given as well.

Last year over 50 children participated in this free event. The biggest fish measured was 8 inches; smallest 2.75; most fish caught 33. “This is lots of fun and really amazing,” Monica Parsons with Meadows Place Parks & Recreation said. “We started this event to educate the children about conservation and nature.” Volunteers and sponsorships from the PARC, Sugar Grove Church of Christ, and Ashbrook Simon-Hartley will be on hand to assist the youth with the proper ways to bait a hook, remove the fish from the hook, as well as measure, keep records, and hand out water.

The lake at McGrath Park is ecologically responsible and uses only reclaimed water with a pump system developed by Ashbrook Simon-Hartley.
