Smoking Ordinance

As of August 1, the smoking ordinance that was passed earlier this year has officially gone into effect. Mayor Leonard Scarcella reminded businesses that as part of the ordinance a sign must be affixed to the outside of their place of business designating themselves to the public as either a smoking or non-smoking establishment. Bars that earn 70% or more of the earned revenue from alcohol sales are exempt.

Fines for smoking in non-exempt retail places are at the discretion of a judge, however, the penalty can be “up to $2,000.”

Train Incident

On July 26 around 7:30pm a train incident occurred at the South Gessner intersection that involved the clipping of an aerial fiber-optic line. Charles Russell, City Engineer, explained that Comcast was not sure if the train was too high or the cable too low, but the line was severed. After that line was cut it swung into a power line, causing disruption there as well.

The placement of an operational ring system was discussed, but that would only help reroute city properties, not homeowners. Councilman Robert Sorbet mentioned that in the last six months there has been a disruption in his Comcast service lasting anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours. Councilman Cecil Willis suggested that they invite a representative from Comcast to a future council meeting.
