WCJC Motion capture video system & game development degree program moves to Richmond campus

When classes in the Wharton County Junior College computer simulation and game development degree program move from the college’s Sugar Land campus to its Richmond campus this fall, students will have access to an eight camera motion capture system.

Motion capture technology enables students to film an actor making the movements they want to incorporate into a game. Cameras capture reflections from the actor’s attire, which includes magnetic markers. This motion data is then converted into a composite figure, which is further modified by computer animation software to make the character’s movements more life-like.

WCJC began offering an Associate of Applied Science degree in Computer Simulation and Game Development last fall. The two-year program, developed in response to student and employer demand, prepares students for entry-level work in the field of gaming and simulation benefitting industries such as healthcare, law enforcement, military, advertising and others.

The WCJC program focuses on the programming side of computer simulation and game development, exposing students to a broad range of simulated training environments. Among the software students use is Adobe® Creative Suite®, Autodesk® Entertainment Creation Suite and Unity.

WCJC developed its computer simulation and game development degree program in partnership with the University of Houston-Victoria and the University of Houston. Graduates of the WCJC program can easily transfer to UHV, taking coursework at the UH Sugar Land campus, to complete a bachelor’s degree in digital gaming and simulation.
