Meadows Place passes “Franchise Tax” for future road projects

The issue of damaged interior streets for the City of Meadows Place has been a real concern for some time now. At this month’s City Council meeting, two ordinances passed unanimously to collect and hold a new tax to pay for future road repairs. This fee, assessed as part of the garbage collection, is $5 dollars per month, per resident.

Mayor Charles Jessup explained that the city does not have enough funds allocated for the excessive amount of road repairs needed. TxDOT helps with repairs to West Airport and S. Kirkwood, but it’s up to them to repair their neighborhood streets. By year’s end, the fund will have accumulated 90K.

Before this ordinance was passed, the City of Meadows Place conducted a road fee survey for residents on their website to gauge public opinion. The following are some of the questions asked:

• Satisfaction with interior streets – 36% Satisfied; 31% Not-Satisfied
• Is City doing a good job with what money they have – 59% Yes
• Do streets impact property value – 58% Yes
• Would you like to see the City do more – 88% Yes
• How should the City fund this – 76% Flat Fee per Household
• How much should “garbage fee” be per month – 44% (the highest) said $3

Mayor Jessup thanked everyone for their support in passing this ordinance. “Three to five years from now what we did tonight is going to make a big difference.”
