University Branch Library Book Club to discuss “The Dog Stars”

The next meeting of the University Branch Library Book Club will take place on Monday, October 14, beginning at 1:30 pm, in the Small Meeting Room of the library, located at 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus. The book to be discussed is the 2013 “Gulf Coast Reads” selection, The Dog Stars, written by Peter Heller.
In this post-apocalyptic novel, Heller takes a battered and brutal landscape and finds joy and hope where none was seen before. After a flu pandemic wipes out most of humanity, Hig finds himself alone at a small country airstrip in Colorado with his dog, Jasper, and a mercurial, gun-toting misanthrope named Bangley. With his wife gone and his friends dead, Hig spends his days flying the perimeter of his airport community, looking out for intruders and thinking about the things he has lost. When a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life might exist beyond the boundaries of his home. Risking everything, he flies past his point-of-no-return and follows the static-broken transmission, only to find something that is both better and worse than anything he could imagine.

The “Gulf Coast Reads: On the Same Page” program is a collaborative reading initiative coordinated by Fort Bend County Libraries, the Harris County Public Library System, the Brazoria County Library System, the Montgomery County Memorial Library System, Houston Public Library, and other library and educational institutions, museums, and bookstores. This “one book, one community” reading event is designed to encourage reading and discussion of the same book at the same time, provoking dialogue among co-workers, friends, families, and classrooms.

Anyone interested in meeting with other readers who share the same love for literature and lively discussion is invited to attend. For more information, call the branch library at 281-633-5100 or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.
