Football great to speak at Sugar Land Auditorium October 17

Ken Hall, the “Sugar Land Express”, will be the featured speaker at the Sugar Land Chautauqua Talk.

Sugar Land welcomes home football legend Ken Hall on Thursday, October 17, at 7:00 p.m., to the Sugar Land Auditorium.  The iconic “Sugar Land Express” will take the stage as guest speaker to kick off a new season of Sugar Land Chautauqua Talks at the historic auditorium, located at the corner of Lakeview and Wood streets.

Nicknamed the “Sugar Land Express,” Ken Hall set 17 national high school football records while playing for the Sugar Land Gators from 1950 – 1953.  Several of Mr. Hall’s records stood for over 50 years.  He went on to play professional football in the Canadian and National Football League, including the Houston Oilers.  While with the Oilers, Hall held the record for a 104-yard kickoff return.  Locally, Fort Bend ISD Ken Hall Stadium and the Hall Lake Subdivision in Sugar Land are named for this hometown football hero.

Hear Ken Hall reminisce about growing up in Sugar Land, his family, his football career, and his life after football at the October 17 Chautauqua Talk.  At the conclusion of the program, Mr. Hall will be available to sign autographs at a brief reception at the Auditorium.

Admission is free and seating is open.  The Sugar Land Chautauqua Talks, co-sponsored by the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation and Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation, is a series of entertaining and educational presentations related to Sugar Land history, suitable for audiences of all ages.  The name for the series (pronounced shə-TAW-kwə), is based on an adult educational movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, called the Chautauqua Movement, which began in New York State and spread across rural America to small towns like Sugar Land.  In fact, the Sugar Land Auditorium was designed in 1918, for use by the school and to host community events like the Chautauqua talks.

The Sugar Land Auditorium is located at 314 Lakeview Drive on the Lakeview Elementary School campus, at the intersection of Lakeview and Wood Streets.  The event is free and open to the public.
