Fort Bend Girl Scouts travel paths of adventure with destinations trips across globe
Two Fort Bend area Girl Scouts participated in Girl Scouts of the USA’s destinations program over the summer, traveling to New Zealand and Wyoming. Destinations are travel adventures for Girl Scouts ages 13-18 that take place all over the world and give girls the chance to meet remarkable girls, develop leadership skills, gain confidence and enjoy valuable learning opportunities.
To go on a destinations trip, girls must submit an application, two personal references and an essay explaining why they want to participate in the event and what skills or talents they can contribute to the group.
Girl Scouts can apply for up to four trips per year. A limited number of girls are chosen for each destination, and no more than two girls from one Girl Scout council are chosen to encourage attendees to make new friends. After being chosen for a destination, Girl Scouts are responsible for raising the funds to go on the trip through selling cookies, money earned at a job or personal savings.
Makenzie Uwe, an eighth grader at Lamar Junior High School, traveled to Wyoming for the destination Wyoming’s Wildlife Wonders. While visiting, she enjoyed seeing the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park where she learned about science and careers that promote sustainable ecosystems.
“We went on a canoe trip in the Grand Tetons and camped in Yellowstone,” said Makenzie. “Visiting the different geysers, including Old Faithful, were definitely a highlight. We went on some really beautiful hikes and were able to see wildlife including a bear, elk, bison and pronghorns.”
Madeleine Harbin, a freshman at Creighton University this fall, traveled to New Zealand for the destination New Zealand: Twenty Thirteen. While on her trip, Madeleine saw the Skytower, Harbor Bridge, Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium, Mission Bay and more.
“My favorite part was when we went skiing,” said Madeleine. “Being from Texas, I definitely don’t see snow often, so I was excited to be on a mountain.”
