Take an afternoon book break at George Memorial Library

Book-lovers are invited to take a Book Break at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond, on Thursday, November 21, beginning at 12:00 noon, in Room 2C. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy a literary discussion of the 2013 “Gulf Coast Reads” selection, The Dog Stars, written by Peter Heller.

In this post-apocalyptic novel, Heller takes a battered and brutal landscape and finds joy and hope where none was seen before. After a flu pandemic wipes out most of humanity, Hig finds himself alone at a small country airstrip in Colorado with his dog, Jasper, and a mercurial, gun-toting misanthrope named Bangley.

With his wife gone and his friends dead, Hig spends his days flying the perimeter of his airport community, looking out for intruders and thinking about the things he has lost. When a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life might exist beyond the boundaries of his home. Risking everything, he flies past his point-of-no-return and follows the static-broken transmission, only to find something that is both better and worse than anything he could imagine.

This book club is free and open to the public. Call the library at 281-341-2677 for more information.
