Deputy Constable pulls teen from Brazos River

By LeaAnne Klentzman

The despondent teen who jumped from the Jodie Stavinoha Bridge over the Brazos was pulled to safety by a Deputy Constable last Thursday night shortly before 11 pm.

Precinct 4 Deputy Constable Joseph Villarreal responded to calls for help at 16302 Texas 99 (Grand Parkway). When Villarreal arrived on the scene he found himself on the north side of the Jodie Stavinoha Bridge over the Brazos River. As reported, he could hear screams for help as a father was calling to his son.

According to officials, the 17 year old was suicidal and had jumped from the bridge however he miscalculated and ended up plunging into the water covering deep mud, about 5 feet or deeper, along the edge of the rain swollen river, said Precinct 4 Constable Lieutenant Ruben Valencia.

Lt. Valencia said as deputy Villarreal was making his way down the embankment to try and get the teen when he slipped and fell causing ligament damage to his wrist. Undaunted and determined, Villarreal stayed his course and with the assistance of Sheriff’s Deputy Green and an unidentified State Trooper’s help, they formed what the Lieutenant described as a “human chain” so they could reach the teen and help him “army crawl” out of the water and muck to get him up the riverbank to the waiting medical transport.

As a result of this incident the 17 year old was taken to a nearby hospital for leg injuries as well as psychiatric evaluation. Deputy Constable Joseph Villarreal was also transported to a different local hospital where he was treated for wrist injuries. At press time he remains off duty recovering.

Deputy Constable Joseph Villarreal is a Precinct 4 contract deputy for the New Territory subdivision. The despondent teen the officers pulled from the river is a New Territory resident.
