Merle Smithers

MERLE SECHRIST SMITHERS, was born January 3, 1938, in Pampa, Texas, and passed away November 7, 2013, in Sugar Land, Texas, due to complications from Alzheimer’s.

Merle married the love of her life Don Smithers, on April 13, 1955, in Pampa, Texas, and spent her early married life in Moore, Oklahoma, where she was involved with church, PTA, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and raising her four children.

She has lived in Sugar Land for almost 40 years and was very active in the community, being involved with the Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation, the Fort Bend Literary Council, and a member of the Sugar Land Parks Board.  Merle was an executive secretary until her retirement, having worked for the UT Dental School, Lever Brothers, BMC Software, and Stone & Webster Engineering.   Merle and Don were members of Sugar Creek Baptist Church.  Recently she became a Sugar Land Skeeters fan and hardly ever missed a game.

She was an amazing wife and mother who loved to travel, garden, read, and sew.   Her greatest joy in life was spending time with family.

Merle was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Lura and Wade Reeves; her father, Olen Sechrist; and her mother-in-law and father-in law, Elmer & Grace Smithers.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Don Smithers of Sugar Land, TX; her children, Nancy (Kevin) Draper of Katy, TX, Donna (Kevin) Foley of Galveston, TX,  Joyce (Doug) Keith of Austin, TX, and Gene (Jennifer) Smithers of Tomball, TX;  her grandchildren, Travis (Dallas) Ledger, Melissa and Derek Draper, Lauren Keith; step-granddaughter, Candice Keith; and great-grandson, Hayes Ledger.   Merle is also survived by her sisters, Nancy (Ronald) McDaniel of Ada, OK, Charlene (Gerald) Wright of Pampa, TX, Sandra (Bobby) Ragan of Conway, AR, and Brenda (Jimmy) Humphrey of Coalgate, OK; a brother, Doug Reeves of Pampa, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

A Visitation was held on Monday, November 11th, from 6-8 PM, at The Settegast-Kopf Co. @ Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land.  A Service celebrating Merle’s life was held at 2 PM, on Tuesday, November 12th, in the Chapel at Sugar Creek Baptist Church Chapel, 13213 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, with the Rev. Marty Mikelson, officiating.
