George Ranch High School’s Fine Arts Department’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” is Dec. 5, 6, 7

Shown is the cast of GRHS in their production of “The Wizard of Oz”

The excitement is building. Musical numbers are being fine-tuned, dance steps perfected, and the sets are in place for George Ranch High School Fine Arts Department production of The Wizard of Oz.  Performances are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, December 5, 6, and 7 at 7:30pm, and Sunday, December 8 at 2pm at the George Ranch High School “OZitorium”.

The play, based on the book by L. Frank Baum, is the classic tale of Dorothy, the little girl from Kansas who finds herself in an fantastic world Somewhere Over the Rainbow.  It includes everyone’s favorite characters from the movie including the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Lion, the Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West,  the Good Witch (known as Glinda in the movie), and the Munchkins.  Some “new” characters taken directly from the book – a skeleton named Tibia, the Jitterbugs, two visiting witches, and a host of characters in the Emerald City- round out the story.  Adding some comic relief to Dorothy’s perilous journey are the Munchkins, including 25 children from Dickinson, Campbell, Velasquez, Williams, and Thomas elementary schools.

The GRHS Theatre and Art Departments have teamed up to create the sets, which are designed to look like a pop-up storybook.  But the highlight of the show just might be the “flying” of Dorothy, the witches, and the Wizard using a special rigging system by ZFX Flying Effects, an industry leader in stage, film and concert productions.  “We are just so excited,” said Rebecca Walters, Theatre Director at GRHS, “with a cast of 75, ten full musical numbers, and all the special visual effects, it is our biggest show ever!  We can’t wait for everyone to see it!”

The directors for the production are GRHS Theatre Directors Rebecca Walters and L. Jay Meyer, vocal director Christopher Cuellar assisted by student teacher Melanie Morris, choreographer Tashane O’Haver, and orchestral directors Daren Jordan and Lisa Stiles.  Tickets are $10 Adults, $5 Students, and Pre-schoolers free at the door.
