Rosenberg opens new animal shelter

It was unfortunate timing that the first official cold snap of the season happened so soon after everyone was still getting used to the brand new animal shelter in Rosenberg.

“Somebody had to help us figure out the heater”, said Animal Control Supervisor, Jackie Jurasek.

But the animals in the care of Jurasek and Animal Control Officer Renee McAnally are getting used to their new digs in the facility at 1207 Blume Road, immediately adjacent to the old Rosenberg Animal Control facility.

“We went from 900 square feet to more than doubling that”, Jurasek said.  “We now have more human space which makes us more efficient”.

The new space has larger lobby area and is more welcoming with large windows that let in natural light.  It includes improved areas for animal prep and care, a designated visitation room for getting to know prospective animals for adoption, and a covered sally port for improved building access and animal transfers.

The shelter has 8 dog kennels for smaller dogs and 12 cat kennels.  Ten larger kennels at the old facility are being used for dogs who are larger than a cocker spaniel.  The nine cat kennels in the old facility can be used in the event of overflow at the new facility.  The new air conditioning unit vents air to the outside which Jurasek says will greatly help with odor control.

The new facility provides space for the City’s two animal control officers and an additional staff person in the future, and the building is designed for expansion toward the rear of the property as the need arises.

Additionally, the project includes an approximately 2,500 gallon rainwater harvesting tank – a first for the City of Rosenberg.

“The animals won’t drink it, but it is perfect to clean kennels, wash the animal control vehicle and water the landscaping”, said Jurasek.
