Fort Bend ISD welcomed 33 high school juniors to the 2013-2014 season of the District’s Student Leadership 101 program. Sponsored by the FBISD Board of Trustees, the program gives juniors, representing all FBISD high schools, the unique opportunity to explore various roles in community leadership and service.

The 2013-2014 cohort members include: Austin High School – Yuthika Gundamaraju, Chasity Henry, Antony Samuel; Bush High School – Zachary Person, Kymberli Russo, Ciara Thompson; Clements High School – Uddav Marwaha, Shelby Stone, Marina Tan; Dulles High School – Elena Dang, Michelle Huang, Sharon Liu; Elkins High School – Aadithya Srivatsav, Jonathan Winfiele, Kevin Zhang; Hightower High School – Renaja Burns, Tim Chou, Tasneed Shaik; Kempner High School – Nicholas Anderson, Kathrin James, Brian Thorpe; Marshall High School – Breona Autry, Samuel Awolope, Marqua Luckey; Ridge Point High School – Hudson Blom, Joshua Mack, Cherie Vu; Travis High School – Paulina Agyei, Fahad Noormohammed, Sean Saldanha; and Willowridge High School – Brittani Collins, Natalia Francis, Britany King.

The cohorts kicked off the new season in November by participating in Seminar #1: “Building Your Leadership Skills.” Program Coordinator Mike Madden welcomed the students to the program and provided an overview to let them know what to expect throughout the school year. Madden also introduced Superintendent Charles Dupre, who reminded students that they are among a distinct group of students selected to participate in the program. “You were each selected by our School Board based on the essays you submitted,” said Dupre. “I want to encourage you to take full advantage of this awesome experience, be fully engaged, and most of all, have fun.”

FBISD Board Member, Jenny Bailey, joined the students in the day-long seminar as the program’s Sponsor for the Day. They completed a series of indoor ROPES activities led by FBISD ROPES Course Managers Lynda Ruther and Jim Harton. The activities gave participants the opportunity to get acquainted with each other while promoting teambuilding.

“Student Leadership 101 provides students with a great opportunity to connect with their peers from high schools across the District and to develop personal leadership skills that they can use in various areas of their lives while in high school, in the community and later in their chosen careers,” said Bailey.

To help students unlock their leadership potentials, FBISD Organizational Development Coordinators will lead them in StrengthsFinder lessons throughout the year. Jamie Vincek presented an overview of StrengthsFinder lessons and asked students to complete the online assessment from The Gallup Organization to discover their strengths. She and her colleagues will work with students throughout the year to help develop their strengths.

“I am excited to be a part of Student Leadership 101,” said Aadithya Srivatsav of Elkins High School. “I want to become a better leader and gain a clearer vision of what it takes to become a good leader so that I can better plan and prioritize future goals.”

The group will meet once a month through May. The next session will focus on Leadership in Community Volunteerism.
