Former Skeeter Scott Kazmir signs with Athletics

Left-hander agrees to 2 year contract

Former Sugar Land Skeeters pitcher Scott Kazmir has signed with the Oakland Athletics, according to the Associated Press. The $22 million, two-year agreement is the largest contract signed by a former Atlantic League player in the Major Leagues.

Kazmir joined the Skeeters in July 2012 and quickly made his mark within the starting rotation. The two-time American League All-Star (2006 and 2008) started 14 games with Sugar Land, going 3-6 with a 5.34 ERA, collecting 51 strikeouts in 64.0 total innings pitched.

After his time with the Skeeters, the lefty revived his Major League career spending the 2013 season with the Cleveland Indians. He started 29 games with the Indians, going 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA and collecting 162 strikeouts in 158.0 total innings pitched. In his 14 starts at Progressive Field, Kazmir went 7-2 with a 3.86 ERA for the Indians.

Originally a first-round pick of the New York Mets in the June 2002 draft, Kazmir owns a career 76-70 Major League record with a 4.16 ERA over nine seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays (2004-2009), Los Angeles Angels (2009-2011) and Cleveland Indians (2013).

Opening Day for the Sugar Land Skeeters is scheduled for Thursday, April 24 against the Lancaster Barnstormers.
