The Afterburner 12/11/13

Hope and Change! Well, not so much… Oh, it was with great anticipation that we all watched as the deadline to file for a spot on the local 2014 election ballot crawled to an end. And crawl it did, closed with barely a whimper, making even the possibility of some change… very slim.

Yep, there were rumors, oh, they were fun! Stories about this one slamming that one, and if he does this, well then, I’m gonna do that… Huh, once again, all talk, no action. But if it had… Well, I’m here to tell ya’ – Ms. Carter may have made a return appearance or at the very least been drag’n chains all over this county!

Some of the more interesting races this season are District 27 State Rep Ron Reynolds has drawn a Republican opponent deep in the bosom of the Democratic Party. District Attorney John Healey has again drawn a couple of opponents; one from his own Republican team and the other from Democrat Wilvin Carter. Then there is the vacated spot for County Court at Law 1 that has garnered the interest of three Republicans and a Democrat and the District Clerk Annie Rebecca Elliott has drawn an opponent from her own party out of Richmond and a Democrat from Katy.

In wrapping up all the local contested races, who would have ever guessed that the local Richmond JP, Mary Ward, would have been tested by two opponents; one from her own party and one from the Democrats.

As 2013 comes to a close so has the life of a great Statesman: Nelson Mandela passed away this week after suffering with lung problems that arose during his some 27 years in prison for standing against Apartheid in his native South Africa. Nelson Mandela has left a lasting legacy across his country but shared a lesson with the world; forgiveness is the key to life.

In the words of Abraham Lincoln, “The ballot is stronger than the bullet.”.
