WCJC’s 5K Stride and Stroll a success

The Wharton County Junior College (WCJC) Senior Citizen Program recently held a 5K Stride & Stroll fundraiser with proceeds from the fundraiser benefitting the program. The WCJC Senior Citizen Program provides hot meals and a variety of services to adults 60 year and older who reside in Wharton County.  The stride and stroll raised over $7,000 for the program.

Prizes were awarded for various first place finishers as well as for best costume, cheering group, and best decorated stroller or wagon. The stride and stroll fundraiser recorded over 200 registrants.   “I want to extend a special thank you to our sponsors and stride and stroll donors for their support of the WCJC Senior Citizen Program,” said Caroline Osborne, senior citizens program director. “I appreciate that so many from the community came out to support the senior program.”

First place prizes and certificates were presented to participants and categories as listed: 

  • First Male to finish the race – John Herrera of Boling
  • First Female to finish the race – Debbie Rychlik of Richmond
  • First Place in the 13 and under age category – John Murphree of Richmond
  • First Place Male in the 14-29 age group category – John Herrera of Boling
  • First Place in the 30-49 age group category – Jesse Gutierrez of Wharton
  • First Place in the 50 and over age group category – Richard Delmar of Fulshear
  • Organization with the most participants – WCJC Continuing Education Program and Medical Office Specialists
  • Best Decorated Wheelchair, Theresa Frederick of Wharton with the “Meals on Wheels” entry
  • Best Cheer Group – Just Do It Now Cheer Group
  • Best Costume – The Strollin Dolls
  • Oldest Female Strider -  Donna Wooten of Wharton
  • Oldest Male Strider – Robert Osborne of East Bernard
