Despite the frigid wind on November 24, 195 riders from all parts of Houston and the surrounding area came together to cycle in support of adult literacy education. The 14th Annual Bike the Bend for Literacy successfully raised over $40,000 to date, up from $24,000 10 years ago.

“The success and growth of this major event would not be possible without the generous sponsors, in-kind donors and volunteers, who give of their products, resources, and time to make their community a better place,” said Literacy Council of Fort Bend County Executive Director, Kelli Metzenthin. She added, “We have our dedicated committee to thank for a large chunk of this year’s success. These committed and enthusiastic individuals reached out to their friends and other cycling enthusiasts to spread the word about our programs and the ride.”

Out on the course, the cyclists cruised through a scenic autumn route and stopped off for hydration and fuel at rest stops staffed by the Oyster Creek Rotary Club and Literacy Volunteers. Back at the Foster High School finish line, they enjoyed a delicious brunch from local food truck, Fraiche, and refreshments. Cyclists were also interviewed by Russ Johns from KBRZ local sports radio.

All proceeds will support the life-changing work of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, whose mission is to improve family, community and professional lives through adult literacy education. Cyclists, sponsors and volunteers participating in Bike the Bend for Literacy are helping to unlock the potential for determined adults who want to pass a legacy of literacy (proficiency in reading, writing and understanding the written English language) to their children.
