Sugar Land Robotics Teams advance to regional championship

The “Techno Busters” from Techno Chaos, Sugar Land.

The two Sugar Land-based teams participating in the FIRST® LEGO® League robotics competition advanced through the qualification rounds and will soon compete in the Houston-Area Championship. This program, also known as FLL®, is the largest robotics competition in the world – more than 200,000 students participate worldwide– and is recognized as excellent preparation and development for science, engineering and technology careers. FLL targets students of ages 10-14; this year’s challenge is titled “Nature’s Fury” and focuses on preparation and recovery from natural disasters. The Houston-Area FLL Championship takes place on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Merrell Center in Katy; the public is invited and attendance is free.

The “Techno Busters” (members: Owen Brown, Zach Brunet, Cameron Hinkle, Kyle Koch and Shifan Hirani) are from various public and private schools around the area and meet at Techno Chaos, the STEAM education center in Sugar Land. They placed 2nd in the game competition at the qualifier tournament at Sartartia MS, but the highlight was their team project – a public service video about hurricane safety, produced specifically for kids using Minecraft™ game imagery. You can view their brief video on Youtube and support their goal to get 1,000,000 views for it by searching Google for “HSV7625”.

Shown are the “Roarbots” from Logos Preparatory Academy, Sugar Land.

The “Roarbots” (members: Alexander Alcorn, Case Alexander, Bella Archer, Katriel Cole, Aiden El-Moussa, Chad Lloyd, Chase Pogue, Nathan Rabb, Laura Rabb, Meg San Antonio, Elijah WangChen, Tull White) are from Logos Preparatory Academy. They did quite well in all four competition areas, including a 3rd place finish in the game competition. Their team project also investigated hurricane safety. They examined the impact of Hurricane Ike on Crystal Beach, TX, and created a concept design for a proposed emergency evacuation vehicle they named the “Hamster Ball”.
