Texana receives grant from Fort Bend Junior Service League
Texana Center was thrilled to receive a grant for $18,000 for the Children’s Center for Autism and Behavior Improvement Center in Rosenberg to replace old and worn out playground structure. The current playground structure is not only outdated, but it does not meet Texas Licensed Child Care Center regulations which means that only the older children can play on part of the structure and the younger children are not permitted to use it at all which is problematic when dealing with children with autism.
Play does not come naturally to children with autism and other developmental disabilities they have to learn play skills that seem to come easily to most typically developing children. The Texana Children’s Center for Autism and Behavior Improvement Center uses applied behavior analysis to carefully assess each child’s play skills and specifically teaches these important activities. For most children, the playground is typically the first place where they engage with other children and with the world at large. Play is important for developing thinking, language, emotional, problem solving and creative skills in children with autism.
Specific activities and design elements will be included in the new play structure to target particular learning objectives which include learning skills such as; how to climb, slide, swing, jump, twist, spin, explore, and interact with the playground equipment. Social skills with peers will also be taught so that the children learn how to play, share, take turns, and play hide and seek, cooperation, teamwork, etc. with others; imaginative play and natural environment training such as counting rungs on a ladder, learning words, naming items etc.
Kate Johnson-Patagoc said “I cannot say enough about the Fort Bend Junior Service League and what they have done for the children who come through our program. We are very fortunate to be a beneficiary of the Sugar Plum Market and because of the donations we have received we have been able to enhance our programs. The Fort Bend Junior Service League has helped us to deliver life change services to the children in our autism programs and for that we thank all the members for their work”.
