Reader defends the red light camera issue

Dear Editor,

It doesn’t surprise me at all that the Houston Coalition against red light cameras , or Capt. Van Der Grinten, would use the death of someone to enforce their stand that cameras didn’t prevent the accident.

Once again, the driver who went through the red light was not from Sugar Land. The majority of Sugar Land residents know where the cameras are and tend to be more careful. Out of city folks are not aware of camera locations hence the modification recommendation to put signs alerting everyone.

Some who lives outside of our city don’t seem to care about safety but rather have nothing better to do.  Safety and education are the primary reasons for the cameras and as more and more out of city folks become aware of the cameras, violations will be reduced and less red light jumping will take place.

Cameras are effective when the drivers know they are active and do what is necessary to prevent getting a ticket  and avoid possible accidents. Once again , education , awareness, and compliance will do  much to HELP reduce accidents.
