Resident has better suggestion on red lights and public safety

Dear Sir/Madam,

Considering the way the Sugar Land City Council used a technicality to avoid putting the red light photo-shoot on the ballot would indicate, to me at least, that they fear the outcome of the ballot on this subject.

If the City is truly interested in Public safety, there is a better way to do it, rather than to take photos of cars going through red lights, with an assumption of guilt built-in.

The better way is this: just as we have countdown clocks/timers for pedestrians crossings — which indicate to the pedestrians as to how much time they have left to safely cross the road – the city can improve safety by installing similar countdown timers at these vehicle traffic intersections.

These timers would help motorists understand where they stand with respect to a stale green light, or one that has just turned yellow. A motorist will then have real information to base his decision regarding what Capt. Van calls “… a snap stop-or-go decision on where they think they might be when the light changes to red. ”

This suggestion is not something new. Other places that value safety have similar countdown timers.

In my opinion, something like this would actually improve safety at these intersections, compared to taking penalizing photographs.
