More high tech look to Sugar Land

New cams and message signs coming soon to U.S. 59

Seven close-circuit cameras along U.S. 59, from State Highway 6 to the Grand Parkway, and two large electronic message signs will be getting installed this spring between the Brazos River andUniversity Boulevard.  This area goes right smack though Sugar Land. The TxDOT project is expected to be completed by this summer, and it will require the installation of electrical conduits to power both. Fiber optic cables will then allow for video broadcast to Houston TranStar.  The closed-circuit television equipment will further integrate this area into TxDOT’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) network.  Already there are 15 cameras in use on U.S. 59 through Fort Bend from West Belfort to Highway 6.

A report states that the new camera additions amount to a total of 50 closed circuit traffic cameras in Fort Bend County with others accounting for 14 on the Fort Bend Toll Road, nine on the Westpark Tollway and five on IH 10 in the portions that are in Fort Bend County.

The ITS network technology is intended to monitor roads, particularly during emergencies and inclement weather conditions.
