Perfect score for SMSD Food & Nutrition Audit

By Karen Daniels

SMSD School Board of Trustees held their first meeting of the calendar year last Monday, January 15, delivering very good news. The Child Nutrition Department at SMSD was recently audited by the Texas Department of Agriculture and received a perfect score. The assessment took two days, covered 127 indicators, ensuring that schools are serving healthy, balanced meals and adhering to state guidelines. The audit was conducted in two areas: Critical and General. Critical Areas are broken down into Performance Standards involving; counting, claiming, eligibility, certification, benefits issuance, meal components, and menu items. The General Areas encompass state and federal requirements.

State Compliance Monitor, David Trinidad, noted in his report that, “Food service staff encouraged students to make balanced meal selections and that the Child Nutrition Director, Administrative Staff and Kitchen Management Staff were well prepared, showed knowledge regarding the National School Lunch Program and showed professional conduct throughout the monitoring process.” Superintendant Dr. Lance Hindt shared that he had been told by Mr. Trinidad that ‘in the 10 years he’s been doing this, he has never given a perfect score.”  On average, Mr. Trinidad conducts 40 audits per year, making this is a notable accomplishment.

“Perfect seems to be a trend around here.” Dr. Hindt was referencing the recent perfect score the district received in its FIRST rating. FIRST is an acronym for Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas. Trustee Cindy Hoelscher spoke about Stafford, “Exceeding the minimum requirements” and setting an example for the students.

Multiple thanks and congratulations were given from the board to SMSD Child Nutrition Director, Danny McDonald. “My team worked very hard and I want to thank them for reaching this extraordinary achievement. Even though in the short time we had to get ready for this audit, my staff was able to adapt and overcome, as a result we were able to achieve a perfect review.”
