Not a magical chant, but widely accepted acronyms

The wide use of acronyms such as SOTU, SCOTUS, POTUS, and FLOTUS to name a few is starting to bother some people in this area as they are frequently found in news articles, emails, commentaries, posts and so many other communications.  There’s hope as this could be another trend that may eventually go away, but probably not any time soon.

Acronyms of about a minimum of four letters may be used in lower case, but are frequently in capital letters. Bet just about anyone can readily come up with a list of at least five acronyms in less than a minute…like SLPD, TxDOT, USDA to name a few.  As for the more recent ones out there these days, here’s what they mean.

SOTU – State of the Union

SCOTUS – Supreme Court of the United States

POTUS – President of the United States

FLOTUS – First Lady of the United States

DOMA – Defense of Marriage Act

VRA – Voting Rights Act

Then there’s also that EBT card, which some thought was a mistake and the letter “D” had been left off.

EBT – Electronic Benefit Transfer

These are welfare benefits provided for food and cash; for food formerly through the Food Stamp Program and for cash, benefits are provided as temporary assistance for needy families and refugees.

Some acronyms make it, some don’t. But here’s one a resident said in jest may be coming soon to replace U.S. Government or better yet, the Government of the United States.  It’s “Gotus!”
