Sponsored by Memorial Hermann Sugar Land, the Fort Bend County Women’s Center’s 9th annual event at Fluor Daniel, which was converted to a Diva Den, was about indulgences like manicures, pedicures, massages, dining with foods from the popular area restaurants, and so much fun, including dancing.  Billed for about 1,000 women, last Thursday on Feb. 6, it felt like there were about 3,000 grown up girls at the pj party, the Girlfriends Giggle.  There was shopping for the kinds of things that girls like with an aim at raising money for the Women’s Center to help survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and also their children.  Proceeds will go towards providing free and confidential emergency shelter, counseling, crisis intervention and other supportive services.

You know, it costs $67 a day to provide shelter for a woman.  That was the cost of the general admission ticket and there were upgrades, too.  Those who turned out to support the fundraising effort probably know that while we have come a long way towards meeting the needs of domestic violence victims, there continues to be a gap between funding and the demand for services from those courageously seeking to escape life threatening situations.

The Star salutes the Fort Bend County’s Women’s Center for its essential role in the community with its caring services focused on addressing issues of victims of sexual and domestic assault and their families.

Giggling in healthy relationships for us all is a good thing.  If you’re interested in becoming a giggle sponsor or a vendor for next year’s event, it’s never too early to call the Women’s Center, 281-344-5756 or email Anne Budill, abudill@fortbendwomenscenter.org.
