Thomas Gargiulo “Sugar Tom” to be honored with Memorial Scholarship
The late Thomas Gargiulo, best known as “Sugar Tom” due to his passion for serving the City of Sugar Land and seniors in need, has been honored with the establishment of a memorial scholarship at the University of Houston Sugar Land. “Sugar Tom” was a dedicated, long-time City of Sugar Land volunteer and AARP Sugar Land former President, Board Member and Officer. Tom attended most every Sugar Land City Council Meeting, always sitting in the same seat in the back row and he organized annual candidate forums for AARP Sugar Land members and the general public.
Diana Miller, AARP Board President, donated $1,000 to establish the fund and the organization is working to gather additional donations so the fund may continue to honor Tom who epitomized the AARP Sugar Land Chapter motto, “To Serve, Not Be Served”.
The public is invited to share in the celebration of memorializing Tom’s generosity of giving to others. Shirley Garguilo, Tom’s loving wife of 56 years has been invited to attend. The event will be held at the Sugar Land AARP Chapter Meeting on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at the TE Harman Senior Center at 1:00 pm. Pizza and refreshments will be served.
Those wishing to donate, but unable to attend the gathering, may donate online at https://giving.uh.edu/gift/ or by mail to University of Houston Sugar Land ATTN: Dick Phillips, 14,000 University Blvd, Sugar Land, Texas 77479.
Donations should specify the Thomas “Sugar Tom” Gargiulo Memorial Scholarship fund. For additional information, contact Diana Miller, 713-724-3113 or email AARPSugarLand@gmail.com
