Primary’s early voting ends Friday

By Elsa Maxey

Forecasting the voter turnout in Fort Bend County for the Texas Primary, Elections Administrator John Oldham says it is “a lot less than I thought a month ago.” The experienced elections executive said that at the current pace, referring to the early voting numbers, “we will be hard pressed to hit 35,000,” out of 349,736 eligible for this election. That’s just 10 percent of the electorate in Fort Bend County registered to vote and expected to cast a ballot in the Texas Primary.

Oldham said the turnout also seems very light throughout the state. “Both gubernatorial candidates seem focused on November and are not devoting money to the Primary,” he added. The focus is up ahead, even in relation to early voting participation now. Some local voters say they’re still receiving candidate flyers by mail and reviewing them as well as paying attention to political ads on TV before they go vote.

Fort Bend County’s daily posting of the early voting turnout at 17 sites shows highest turnouts at Cinco Library, First Colony and Rosenberg with corresponding numbers of 856, 701, and 814, the majority of them Republican Party voters. Of 5,712, who voted early as of the reported numbers on Monday, 4,527 voted in the Republican Party Primary and 1,185 in the Democratic Primary.

The outcome of the Texas Primary, where a voter casts a ballot in either the Republican or the Democrat party primary, will have winners going on the November General Election ballot for a final vote.

Oldham advises those deciding to cast their vote on Election Day to do so at their assigned polling location.

He further reminds voters of the need to present an approved form of photo identification at the polling place. The Texas Primary Election Day is Tuesday, March 4th with voting from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
