Sugar Land says goodbye to Asst. City Manager Karen Daly
By Karen Daniels
On February 26, the City of Sugar Land threw a going away party for their Assistant City Manager, Karen Daly. She is taking a new position as City Manager for the City of Hutto, a town of nearly 20,000 located 30 miles northeast of Austin. Mayor James Thompson said, “This is bittersweet for us because we know she’s done a great job.”
Daly came to Sugar Land in July of 2007 after serving as City Manager of Greenville, Texas. While in Sugar Land she worked in almost every city department: Finance, IT, HR, Parks & Recreation, Public Works, and Engineering, earning the nickname “Ms. Ethics.” She worked on many committees that shaped our future: Imperial Park, Memorial Park, TE Harman Community Center, New Year’s Eve, Surface Water Treatment Plant, Green Team, and many more. She has been a leader in the community as a board member of the Sugar Land Exchange Club and past-president of The ARC of Fort Bend County. The type of person that has boundless energy, Karen was also in charge of Pro-Grad for her daughter Emma’s senior year at Kempner High School and organized group outings for charity like the annual “Mimosa Mamas” who attended the Casa Christmas Home Tours.
“We know she will do a tremendous job in Hutto,” City Manager, Allen Bogard, said of Karen. “Being in the driver’s seat is where she belongs.” Several co-workers and community members came forward to share their memories of great times working with Karen and how much they will miss her. “Everyone here has been a blessing to work with,” she said. “This has been an enriching time for me.” Her favorite event during her tenure, believe it or not, was Hurricane Ike. “I was very proud of Sugar Land and the way our city pulled together during a time like that.”
Good luck to Karen, her husband Steve, and daughter’s Emma and Clair as they begin a new journey in Hutto, Texas. Thanks for all you’ve done in Sugar Land!
