Quail Valley MS students selected to perform at Words & Art Event
For the second consecutive year, Quail Valley Middle School students were selected to read their poetry and prose during Rice University’s “Words & Art” program, held March 5 at Rice Gallery.
Five students and one teacher were selected as Featured Readers at the event. Included were: Jessie Chambers (reading Fairy Land’s Reality), Madeline Champlin (¡Cuidado!), Yash Desai (Inside the Garden of Bliss), Chelsea Macasaet (Small Maliit), Dylan MacAdams (Garden of Stillness) and Teacher Nicole Frazier (Garden Synesthesia). Seven additional students were chosen to attend the second reading. They were: sixth graders Vyshnavi Davuluri, Sairaja Kurelli and Satwik Misra; and seventh graders Parth Dargan, Leo Dong, Adarsha Pokkulandra and Rayan Wali. The students are instructed by Joe Bernhart, Troy Drayton, Nicole Frazier and David Sebek.
To be considered for the readings, the students prepared poetry and prose inspired by artist El Ultimo Grito’s artwork, Garden Object, which they viewed during a free writing workshop at the Gallery in February. More than 60 QVMS students took part in the workshop. The honored students joined the ranks of prominent Houston-area adult poets and authors spotlighted at the event, coordinated by Mary Wemplet.
