Koby Clemens, Jared Wells, and Smith sign
The Sugar Land Skeeters announced that the club has added three players to its 2014 roster: catcher Koby Clemens, along with right-handed pitchers Jared Wells and Chris Smith.
Clemens, 27, returns after spending last year as Sugar Land’s primary catcher. In 2013, the Houston native ranked fifth among Atlantic League hitters with 21 home runs and led the Skeeters with 60 RBI on the season. Drafted by the Houston Astros in the eighth round of the June 2005 Draft out of Memorial High School, Clemens owns a career .259 (787×3040) average with 124 homers and 517 RBI over nine minor league seasons.
Wells, 32, appeared in 40 games for Sugar Land last season, posting a 2-1 record with one save, a 4.12 ERA (22ER/48IP) and 60 strikeouts. Prior to joining the Skeeters staff last year, the right-hander spent nine seasons with the San Diego (2003-08), Seattle (2008-09), Houston (2010) and Colorado (2012) organizations, combining for a career 44-56 record with 34 saves and a 4.49 ERA (436ER/873.1IP). A Texas native, Wells was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 31st round of the June 2002 Draft.
Smith, 32, joins the Skeeters following 20 starts with the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association in 2013, producing an 8-4 record with a 3.55 ERA (52ER/132IP). A veteran of 10 minor league seasons with Boston (2002-08), Milwaukee (2009-10) and Seattle (2011), Smith owns a 49-43 record with a 3.85 ERA (357ER/835.1IP) in 261 career appearances (120 starts). The right-hander also spent time with the Boston and Milwaukee big league clubs (2008-10), combining for a 1-0 record with a 5.19 ERA (39ER/67.2IP) over 50 Major League games. A native of California, Smith was originally selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fourth round of the June 2002 Draft.
