Fiesta ends in Sugar Land
By Elsa Maxey
Touted for its fresh produce, straight from the garden green beans the other day, the Fiesta Market Place in Sugar Land will soon be a memory. Manager Raul Rodriguez confirmed the store’s closing this Tuesday. He also told the Star the company made the decision to close the store. After not quite a year of operation at one of the entrances to the Sugar Creek neighborhood, April 20th will mark its closure.
In spite of its international and specialty foods along with many other grocery store offerings, the store, which opened last year in July, is shutting down reportedly because it did not meet expectations. Another grocery store in Sugar Land, the Kroger’s on SH 6 and Settlers Way closed last year, but it was also located across the street from Randalls, a competitor, in the shopping strip across from it and still operating at the site and in the vicinity of two other specialty grocery stores.
Fiesta’s location was previously occupied by Gerlands’ Grand Market, which closed in 2012. The Fiesta store represented a first location in Sugar Land and has been one of three in Fort Bend County. Two others currently operating are, one each, in Missouri City and Rosenberg. Fiesta Mart has more than 30 locations in the Houston area and other locations in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin areas.
Adios, Fiesta Mart!
