Man arrested in Sugar Land murder
By LeaAnne Klentzman
In one of the most brazen acts seen in Sugar Land for a while, two men walk into a cabinet manufacturing business, ask for a specific employee, shoot him, and run back to their parked car to flee from responding police.
Sugar Land Police responded to the 911 call at Global Casework Manufacturing located at 910 Industrial Boulevard in Sugar Land at 9 a.m. on Friday morning, March 21. Two men, not affiliated with the manufacturing firm, walked into the business asked for Marlon Alexander Palencia Castaneda, 33, of Houston.
The intruders, both Hispanic males, one dressed in a black shirt and the other in orange, argued with Castaneda in the shop, then fired a single gunshot, hitting him in the chest. Castaneda died at the scene. The intruders fled the building and drove away in a light colored Acura SUV.
The manhunt was immediate and the dragnet was cast wide. The incident was captured on the surveillance camera.
Police from neighboring agencies assisted Sugar Land in the search for the suspects. Several people were detained but no suspects were found that day. The investigation unfolded over the next few days and Sugar Land Police were able to identify Huver Oregon-Reyes, 31, of Houston, as the man wearing the black shirt in the surveillance video.
“Sugar Land detectives worked with the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force to locate Oregon-Reyes who was taken into custody overnight by US Marshalls and taken to the Denton County Jail where he awaits transport back to Fort Bend County, said Sugar Land police spokesman Doug Adolph.
Oregon-Reyes is being held on a $300,000 bond.
The case remains fluid and anyone with information about the second man should call the Sugar Land Police Department at (281) 275-2020 or Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at (281) 342-TIPS (8477).
