Skeeters announce 2014 coaching staff
The Sugar Land Skeeters announced today the club’s 2014 coaching staff, led by Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti. This year, the staff includes returning Pitching Coach Jeff Scott as well as newly-appointed Coach David McDaniel.
Scott, 59, enters his second season as the Skeeters pitching coach in 2014. Prior to joining Sugar Land last year, the former right-hander served as manager of the Atlantic League’s Camden Riversharks (2012), as well as Camden’s director of operations and pitching coach from 2009-11. A native of Illinois, Scott began a scouting and player development career with the Seattle Mariners in 1983. Following that stint, he served as scouting director with the Cleveland Indians (1987-88), Detroit Tigers (1994-96) and St. Louis Cardinals (1999-2001) organizations. Scott owns a lifetime 36-37 record with a 3.55 ERA (228ER/578IP) over six minor league seasons.
McDaniel, 41, joins Sugar Land in his first year as coach following five seasons as an assistant coach with Fort Bend Christian Academy in Texas. Last season, McDaniel helped the FBCA Eagles to the 2013 TAPPS 4A State Championship title while assisting the Skeeters club in an unofficial instructor role. With more than 20 years of coaching and instructor experience in the Houston area. A former Episcopal High School (TX) player, McDaniel played collegiate baseball locally for San Jacinto College and Houston Baptist University before pursuing a professional coaching career.
“Both of these coaches are invaluable to the organization,” said Gaetti. “Jeff Scott has such a great demeanor and personality for coaching. With his knowledge of the game, it’s like working with a baseball encyclopedia. David McDaniel is another example of a no-brainer, great fit for this team. The players are comfortable around him, they trust him and his experience and work ethic make him a huge asset.”
Gaetti, 55, signed a three-year contract extension with the Skeeters in January following a record-breaking 2013 season with the club. Last September, the former Major Leaguer led Sugar Land to its first-ever Atlantic League playoff appearance. The team’s 95-45 record last season marked a new Atlantic League record for wins in a single season, while Gaetti took home Atlantic League Manager of the Year honors in just his second year with the Skeeters.
